A bout of bad luck
A few mistakes
And the consequences

I watched my father lose his job again
Not his fault
Not enough work for so many men
Just more bad news
The factory laid off another ten
Ten more sent blindly to the lion’s den
And I was young, but I thought I was old
And I didn’t know better

I went looking for work despite my age
Across the railroad tracks
To where the people with the money lived by the lake
